Caught a Cold

I had the start of a sore throat yesterday. Today, I have postnasal drip and my sore throat is worse. My mother-in-law and father-in-law caught colds at the end of our cruise and it appears I didn't escape it.

I had a chat session with ChatGPT to understand more about why mucus irritates the throat. With a cold, mucus contains neutrophil, lymphocyte, macrophage and eosinophil cells, all a part of the immune system to eradicate the infection. When the body detects the presence of a pathogen, it triggers the release of immune cells through cytokine molecules. These molecules cause blood vessels to dilate and thin so more nutrients, oxygen and immune cells can reach the affected tissue. This increases liquid pressure, causing edema. The excess liquid help dilute the pathogen so it can be easily flushed out of the tissue.

This makes me think of a few thing. First, the human body is a wonder of nature. How all these systems work together is fascinating. Honestly, for me, the presence of intricate, functional complexity is a sign of some overarching intelligence that guided the formation of these systems. I may discuss that more in a future post.

Second, the healing process involves temporary discomfort to remove a foreign substance. Rather than being a mistake, pain is a part of the function. Perhaps this also applies to the larger human scale as well. Maybe what we see as human suffering is a part of some civilizational immune system response to remove social pathogens from humanity. What is a pathogen and what is healthy tissue is a whole other topic.

Last, the fact I could learn all of this from an AI system is incredible. There's no timely way I could have found the right people to question to learn more about sore throats. The only way ChatGPT can work is through the presence of data. It needs information to parse. In pursuit of the divine, I think the same rule applies. We need data to learn from. This can only come through human minds. If there is a spiritual life beyond this physical life, the only way we can learn about it is through the sharing of thoughts and experiences. It's a collective effort. No one person or class of people hold a monopoly on this data.

All this to say, always stay curious and share what you learn.
